Reno Nevada: Biggest Little City in the World
Did you know that Reno Nevada, the Biggest Little City in the World, was once the center of all legalized gambling in the country, before Las Vegas sprang out of the desert in southern Nevada?
Much has changed over the years. Reno still has a number of high end casinos and gambling tourism still plays a role. And, nearby Lake Tahoe is recognized around the world as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
But over the last several years, Reno has emerged as a key hub in the warehousing and distribion system for the western U.S. region. A number of companies operate major distribution centers servicing the western states including Amazon.com. This new industry also has created many jobs and spin off support industries.
Reno is also going through a re-development phase cleaning up old and under used neighborhoods. The new “West End” is emerging as a new bar and restaurant area attracting the under crowd.
Reno also participated in the recent housing boom. Many of the old casinos have been torn down or retrofited to make way for new high rise condominium projects in downtown Reno. And, the surrounding areas have built several luxury, gated condo and town home developments perfect for second home buyers.
Reno wasn’t spared from the housing crash. Some large scale projects have been put on hold while others have plenty of vacancies. Foreclosures have risen and prices have fallen. The Reno market has faired better than other markets, such as Las Vegas that over built, but buyers can still find a deal.
A big draw for the area has always been the outdoor lifestyle. During the summer, Reno loves to enjoy water sports on the Truckee River, Pyramid Lake and of course Lake Tahoe. Winter time, it’s skiing in the Sierras!
Reno and Lake Tahoe continue to be a vacation destination, especially for Northern California. The economy is growing, the city is improving, new condo developments are being built, home price corrections are working its way through, and the area provides great lifestyle options and plenty of outdoor activities.
